① 一つ以上のアイテム（名詞、名詞句）を紹介する場合に使用されます。

リストが動詞または前置詞の直後に来る場合は、使用されません。

② 論理的に関連している二つの独立節（主語と動詞を含み、一つの文として成り立つ）を接続する場合に使用されます。
二つ目の文が一つ目の文の内容をまとめたり、説明したりする場合に「.」の代わりに使用されます。
I don’t like Mike: he is loud and annoying.
※固有名詞でない限り、「:」の後のアイテムは小文字から始まります。
上記の文の場合、「I don’t like Mike」と「he is loud and annoying」は共に独立節であり、（二つ目の文）「he is loud and annoying」が（一つ目の文）「I don’t like Mike」の理由を説明しています。
③ 一般的に「,」に続いて引用文は紹介されますが、代わりに「:」を使用することも可能です。主に長い、または二つの文章を引用する場合に使用されます。
The teacher said: “Don’t be late tomorrow because we’ll have a test. Also, don’t forget to bring your calculators.”
※「:」の後の引用文は大文字から始まります
また、記号などとして非文法的に使用される場合もあります。
